EXPOSURE VISIT
EXPOSURE VISIT TO MAHATMA GANDHI INSTITUTE OF
RURAL ENERGY AND DEVELOPMENT
NAME: Divya. Shekar
CLASS: VIII 'A'
DATE: 22 January, 2015
PLACE: Jakkur
The 22nd, we visited the MG institute of rural energy and development at Jakkur. It was an extremely knowledgeable and informative trip. When we reached they were displaying a short movie on how humans have encroached upon the territory of leopards and there is a serious question of their survival.
Next there was a speech delivered by Mr. Sharma, in which he talked about how the forests in the world have come down to about 10% due to urbanization. Usually, we talk about development as if it is a good thing but in this case it threatens the biodiversity of a region as it diverts forest land to other purposes. The MG institute is a regional south Indian institute that mainly functions in Karnataka. It brings about change for the better of human beings, has adopted villages and restricts hunting in animal habitats. Currently Karnataka is home to the most number of tigers in the country i.e., 408.
Then there was a lecture by Mr. Krishna on the topic energy conservation. He started by saying that all living creatures are equal and useful. He further illustrated, we use the honey of honey bees but do not want the bees themselves as they can sting. But it is not a widely known fact that a bee sting prevents Arthritis. In a similar way, a leech that sucks blood purifies it. Inspiring words they truly were.
So its time to stop experimenting with ice cream sticks and thermocole, its about time we step into the real deal and create working projects. In Guatemala City, the capital of Cambodia , people have created working bike engines that run on muscular force. The potential of harnessing alternative sources of energy, its need and application is very high. We think it a bane rather than a boon when we say India is second largest populated country as there is increased energy consumption and waste production, but in reality it is an opportunity because if every person contributes towards producing human energy. Our Earth is such that even in extreme cold temperatures like that in Uttarkhand, boiling hot geysers make their way up to the surface as spring like Gowrikund. This is due to geothermal energy. Next , a way to not let the waste we produce go to waste. Biogas involves converting organic waste into combustible gases like methane.
Next we went to the Energy Park. There we saw many machines which uses methods to utilize the omnipresent natural resources and use it to its fullest extent - solar and wind energy to produce energy using solar panels and wind turbines.
So we know that it is very important to conserve energy, but people say we need to try to use as minimum energy as possible but why do this when there are ways to conserve without compromising our comforts? This is where alternate energy steps in - a way of preserving whatever we have left without having to step out of our comfort zone. We know that our fossil fuels are eventually going to wear out so we do have to gradually develop an alternative, so why wait ?
Why not start mow? Lets develop new ways of conservation together to contribute to a better place to not only survive but to LIVE.
